Using the Registry

Q Do I need a user account to browse?

A No. Browsing the HL7 Functional Profile Registry is available for all.

Q How do I obtain a user account?

A Click on the "User Functions" item in the tool bar, then "Get User Account" in the sub-menu. You will then be presented with the opportunity to fill out a registration form. Once completed, the form will be sent to an administrator. Your account should then be activated within two business days.

Q How do I get a list of registered profiles?

A Click on the "Browse/View" item in the tool bar, then "View Registered Profiles" in the sub-menu.

Q How do I search for a profile?

A Click on the "Search" item in the tool bar. Fill in any of the items presented and click on "Begin Search" at the bottom of the field. For the items asking you to enter text (e.g., Name of Functional Profile, Description, or Keywords), you only need to enter a word or two - this text search-string is used to find registered profiles having the name, description, or keyword that contains the search-string.

Q How do I register my profile?

A Once you have a user account, you can submit a profile for registration. Click on the "Submit" item in the tool bar. Once you enter your username and password, you will be presented with the on-line Registration Form. Answer all questions by supplying the requisite text or by checking the appropriate circle (e.g., Yes, N/A, No).

Q What happens to the profile once it is submitted?

A The EHR TC reviews the registration form and functional profile to ensure that required information is provided and complete. The TC does not evaluate the appropriateness or quality of the functions or criteria in the functional model, but does make sure that the rules for profiles have been followed.

Q How will I know when my profile is registered?

A You will receive an email notification when the profile has been officially registered and appears in the HL7 Functional Profile Registry.

Functional Profile Registration

Q What is registration?

A A formal process exists for registering functional profiles. Functional profiles that are submitted to the HL7 EHR TC with an attestation of conformance to Chapter 2: Conformance Clause of the HL7 EHR-S Standard and successfully complete review by the TC are designated as "Registered functional profiles". For additional information on registering and/or balloting functional profiles, see the reference information in the How To Guide for Profiles.

Q What is the purpose of registration?

A Registration indicates that the submitter of the functional profile believes that it conforms to the HL7 EHR-S Functional Model. Registration can facilitate the adoption of the profile by making it publicly available for use – to be implemented to be used as the basis of a derived functional profile. Registration can help minimize the proliferation of profiles by making people aware of the ones that exist and thus, minimize the need to create new and different profiles. Basically, reuse rather than create new. Also, having a list of functional profiles can serve as an educational tool – e.g., to be used as examples to those building a functional profile or to show the type of functionality applicable to a particular care setting, application, etc.

Q How do I know I’m ready to register my profile?

A Download the Functional Profile Registration Form (click on the "Browse/View" item in the tool bar, then "Download Registration Form" in the sub-menu) and use it as a worksheet. If you can successfully answer the questions, then you are ready to register your profile.

What is a Functional Profile?

Q What is a functional profile?

A Creating a functional profile is a method for defining subsets of the Functional Model. A functional profile is a specification which uses the Functional Model to indicate which functions are required, desired, or implemented for certain EHR systems, Healthcare Delivery Settings, or for other purposes (e.g. profile for legal EHR).

Q Who can create a functional profile?

A Functional profiles can be created by healthcare community stakeholders with interest in using and/or providing a functional profile for an EHR system. Functional profiles can represent the functionality required and desired for a care setting or application, or reflect the functionality incorporated in a vendor's EHR system.

Q How does one create a "Profile"?

A As part of the EHR-S FM there is the Chapter 2, Conformance and there is also a How To Guide reference document to provide direction on the steps needed to create a profile.
